Creative Retreats in the Wye Valley: The Perfect Painting Weekend
There’s something rather wonderful about going away for a weekend with absolutely no intention of rushing anywhere. No packed itinerary. No alarm clock. No need to squeeze ten attractions into two days. Just a beautiful house, a group of people you enjoy spending time with, a pile of paints and sketchbooks – and some of the loveliest countryside in Britain waiting outside the door.
One House, Twenty Opinions: How to Plan a Group Break Everyone Actually Enjoys
Organising a weekend away for two people is fairly straightforward. Organising one for 16, 20 or 30 people can feel more like chairing a particularly lively committee. One person wants long country walks. Someone else considers walking to the pub quite sufficient. There’s always somebody interested in history, somebody looking for good food, children who need entertaining and at least one person whose preferred holiday activity is doing absolutely nothing. The good news? A successful large-group holiday doesn’t depend on finding one activity everybody loves. In fact, quite the opposite. The secret is choosing the right base and giving people enough freedom to enjoy the break their own way.
The Best Part of a Group Holiday Might Start at 6pm
You’ve walked through the Forest of Dean, explored a market town, paddled down the River Wye or spent the afternoon discovering one of the area’s historic houses. Then something rather lovely happens. Everybody comes home. And on a large group holiday, that can be when the best part of the day begins.
Three Generations, One Weekend: Why Big Family Getaways Matter More Than Ever
Getting the whole family together used to happen almost automatically. Sunday lunches. Birthdays. Christmas. Grandparents living around the corner and cousins who actually saw one another more than twice a year. Modern families can look rather different. Children grow up and move away. Jobs take people across the country. Grandchildren have weekend activities, university, partners and lives of their own. Before you know it, arranging one family lunch requires 47 WhatsApp messages and the sort of negotiation normally reserved for international diplomacy. Which is exactly why a multigenerational family getaway can be so special.
Whatever Happened to That Weekend Away We Keep Talking About?
There is probably a group chat somewhere on your phone containing the words: “We really MUST all get away together next year.” Everyone agrees enthusiastically. There are thumbs-up emojis. Someone suggests a cottage. Somebody else says they'll look at dates. And then... Nothing. Six months later, someone mentions it again.
